The challenge: demand is uneven, but inspections only show part of the picture
Sporting ovals rarely wear evenly.
Goal squares, centre corridors, running lanes, warm-up areas and touchline zones can carry far more traffic than the rest of the field. When teams repeatedly train in the same places, the effects compound: turf thins, the surface loses consistency, and maintenance teams are left reacting after the damage is already obvious.
For grounds staff, that creates a difficult balancing act:
- Keep the oval available for clubs and the community.
- Protect the surface through changing weather and seasonal demand.
- Direct limited maintenance time and budget to the areas that need it most.
- Make decisions that can be clearly explained to facility managers, clubs and players.

The approach: turn field activity into a maintenance plan

3. Playing-hours tracking
The platform also records field-use hours, providing a clearer picture of cumulative demand.
When use approaches a locally defined threshold, the team can review the forward schedule and decide whether to:
- rotate training activity;
- rest a high-wear area;
- bring forward targeted maintenance;
- adjust irrigation, aeration or renovation priorities; or
- discuss alternative arrangements with clubs before surface quality is compromised.
The key is not a single “safe” number of hours. Every oval, turf profile, season and maintenance program is different. The value is being able to set a practical threshold, monitor it consistently and act before excess use becomes visible damage.
What this means on the ground
For the grounds team, the platform creates a more targeted maintenance workflow. Instead of treating the oval as a single, uniform asset, they can see its most stressed zones and focus labour, water and remediation where they will have the greatest effect.
